This Saturday CLSA conducted the annual spring invitational for enthusiastic central Illinois Windsurfers.
It was a beautiful day with temps. in 70's [water temp still cool] and included the inaugural use of CLSA's "new" Committee boat, which has been refurbished inside and out: a new mast and rigging and finished off in beautiful blue paint! [Kudos to Dick Hansen for his labors!]
Chris Wojnar and Michelle Moyer committeed the races, setting up a triangle course off the point due west of the pavilion. Winds were fairly steady at 10 to 12 mph.
Four races were run, and by the end most participants had had enough and were exhausted.
The first three places received awards for their efforts: first place went to Richard Wojnar, second went to Hugh Robertson, and third to Ken Moyer.
The highlights in the first race were Hugh Robertson out gunning Rick W. with a great start and out pointing everyone to windward and winning. The third race was the most exciting as the winds picked up, and after rounding the windward mark, the racers went screaming off wind, "planing" [a way sailors are able to skim over the top of the water] while reaching to the "Jibe" mark with Ken Moyer in the lead, presumably with the race in hand, but after rounding the mark, he took a deeper angle to the downwind mark while Hugh R. and Rick W. stayed further upwind and got the inside track. When they reached the "leeward" mark, Rick was able to get just inside everyone because of greater speed and head upwind to the finish and victory.
Eileen Westervelt was out to observe the races in her MC Scow often looking good "planing" off wind while her husband Jim Westervelt was working hard, participating in the races!
It was a wonderful spring day at Lake Clinton and start to the racing season!
