Flying Scot Fleet 135

Come sail with the national, Flying Scot Association's Fleet of the Year!

Flying Scot Sailing at Clinton Lake

The sailors at the Clinton Lake Sailing Association are excited to help introduce the community to the world of sailing. It has never been easier to get started:

Step 1: Basic Keelboat Online -or- Heartland College Introduction to Sailing 1

This online course is based on US Sailing’s Basic Keelboat textbook, which teaches the essential principles of safe sailing for beginners and is the foundation for US Sailing’s Certification Series – the national standard for excellence in sailing and cruising instruction in the United States. Basic Keelboat Online can be taken by anyone, whether preparing for an on-water course at a US Sailing school or for those interested in learning more about the sport. Students who have taken the Heartland College Intro to Sailing 1 course are exempt from this requirement.

Step 2: Sign release

Step 3: Take your first sail

We sail every Wednesday night from April through September from 5:15pm to dusk. Please RSVP by Wednesday night by emailing Eric at fleet135racing@gmail.com.

Why are people attracted to our program?

  • On-board Instructors and coaches. The 19-foot Flying Scot is comfortable and stable, perfect for learning the ropes. You'll be sailing with an experienced instructors.
  • Wednesday Night Sailing. Never stop learning. We usually have 8-12 Flying Scots on the starting line with 20-30 sailors. We set up short race courses, but don't keep score and focus on having fun. If the weather doesn't cooperate, we offer shore clinics that include video training, racing rules, tactics, capsize recovery, knots, and so much more. Many will argue the best part about Wednesday Nights is the camaraderie after the racing as we enjoy cold beverages and the beautiful sunset with great friends.
  • Boat ownership not required. Our Wednesday Night Sailing and Weekend Racing programs do not require boat ownership. In fact, our coordinators send out regular invites and match captain and crew. All you have to do is RSVP and show up.

About the Boat
With more than 6,000 boats built in the United States since 1957, the Flying Scot is Sandy Douglass’s most successful design. The boat — as the famed sailor, designer and builder intended — is a stable and comfortable daysailer and also a top-notch racing boat. The Scot is very simple and comfortable, yet with its spinnaker and excellent handling is also a high-performance, tactical racing boat. Former North American champion Marc Eagan says, “The Flying Scot is one of the finest day sailing tactical boats around.”
