What else?!

  1. Have Fun. It only matters that you have fun and get better. Everyone is encouraged to learn at their own pace. We are serious about having fun and helping people get better.

  2. Boat Ownership Not Required. Those who sail with us regularly can participate in our sailing programs for free and borrow privately-owned loaner boats under supervised conditions.

  3. Coordinated Boat Assignments. Sign up and show up. That’s all one has to do to sail Flying Scots at Clinton Lake. Volunteer coordinators remove a huge barrier to sailing by eliminating the need to find sailing partners and boats while trying to balance family, work, and social demands.

  4. Boats Available for Purchase. Boat ownership offers added benefits and enjoyment. When you are ready to buy a boat, our team of experts will help you every step of the way. For those who sail with us regularly and commit to keeping the boat local and support club building, we offer fleet development boats for sale. These boats have been tuned up by our experienced members, are turn-key, and are typically sold at less-than-market prices.

  5. Privately-Owned Loaner Boats. Our program is supported by private boat owners who loan boats to help support our sailing program and grow the sailing club. CLSA’s commercial insurance policy provides damage and liability protection for boat owners who loan their boat to the club in support of the Learn to Sail Adult Program

  6. Coaching and Mentorship. Our experienced team of sailors is committed to helping lesser experienced racers every step of the way.  Every time you take that next step or need help with your boat, you have the whole team behind you.

FAQ

  • Do I need to buy my own life jacket? No. CLSA provides loaner life jackets.
  • Does your adult sailing program make exceptions for mature kids? Youth that are 12 years or older that are registered and want to learn to sail are eligible. Parents can also learn more about youth sailing activities on the CLSA website.
  • Can I skip the introductory lesson and sail on Wednesdays/Thursdays?  For safety purposes, we require that all Wednesday sailors have a basic understanding of our launching procedures and points of sail.  If you already have small boat experience, or you can’t sign up for a lesson because slots are full or your schedule just isn’t cooperating, email us at CLSAFS135@gmail.com and we’ll work with you and figure out an alternative game plan.
  • Are there restrictions or limitations on borrowing a Flying Scot or Thistle?  Our loaner boats are privately owned and only loaned out for pre-scheduled and supervised activities. We do not rent boats or allow new sailors to sail unsupervised. CLSA Members can also get certified in small boats, Lasers and Sunfish, and borrow these boats when available.
  • What if I am interested in different types of boats? The boat handling skills you learn at the First Lesson will transfer to all boats. We have introduced many sailors to the sport who like sailing single-hand dinghies and/or cabin boats or kites. A few have even found happiness cruising the great lakes and open seas. Some do all of the above. Give it a try and see where the wind takes you.
  • What if I have physical limitations?  If you have mobility concerns we will do our best to match you to a boat that works best for you.
  • Do you offer fast track training?  Yes. We encourage everyone to learn at their own pace, but we can take you where you want to go as fast as you want to get there. If you are not progressing as quickly and would like to accelerate your learning, just let us know.
