Three boats represented CLSA at the Whale of a Sail at Carlyle Lake this past weekend. Bill Vokac, sailing his MacGregor 25 and Joe and Linda Budden, sailing their MacGregor 26, competed in the cabin boats division. And Ben Williams and Deb Aronson, sailing their new Flying Scot, Sophie, competed in the one-designs. There were 12 Flying Scots at the Whale, which was the most of any of the classes.
Wind was moderate both days. Saturday the cabin boats held four races and the one-designs held three. Sunday both groups held one race each. The Buddens finished just out of the trophies in fifth place.
The Williams/Aronson boat finished second in every race, which enabled them to win the Flying Scot division. The competition was fierce in the Flying Scots, with each finish as close as a foot several different races. In the first race Sophie was in about 7th place at the last mark rounding, at which skipper Ben went inside of a large cluster of Flying Scots, picking up about four boats. Then at the finish, with a strong last upwind leg, Ben beat Frank and Marianne Gerry by a hair, placing 2nd behind Susie and Tim Stombaugh. That was exciting! There were several other, equally exciting finishes, but that was the only one that went our way!!
