Our Flying Scot fleet has grown by another boat as new member, John Heizer, his wife, Jennifer, and their baby son, Will, bought a beautiful boat last week. And then, in addition to the distance race on Saturday, in which John and Jennifer, as well as three other Scots, participated, John also joined the fleet Sunday, when we held some triangle races followed by a potluck cookout.
Although the racing was not part of the regular club schedule, enough Scot sailors were yearning for some racing that we agreed to meet Sunday afternoon. Nick Schneider, who has been sailing one of Chris Wojnar's Scots, came down for the racing and then very generously offered to run the committee boat and the races for us. Otherwise we have to drag the marks around by sailboat and we never make the course very big, so that was a very big favor. Thank you Nick!
The racing was fierce: Ben and Deb led in the first race with shifty winds. At the windward mark Don and Karen were in second, followed by Joe and Denise. Then, at the leeward mark, Chris and Rick did a fancy inside route, sneaking by both Don and Karen, who were having spinnaker issues ("we have spinnaker, yes we do!") and Joe and Denise, to move into second place. At the finish it was Ben, Rick and Don in first second and third. John Heizer was single handing his boat and managed to fend off Olof, Anna, Marta and Jacob. What fun!
In the second and third races Chris and Rick took a commanding lead and got two bullets, while Ben and Deb struggled with the wind shifts, coming in second and third in the last two races. Don and Karen worked hard on their spinnaker handling and looked good, coming in third and second in the last two races. Joe and Denise had to retire early, sadly, but the good part is that they started the grill, which was ready when the other boats came in!
So after all that racing we settled in to some brats, gazpacho, all kinds of salad, a nice bonfire and a breathtaking sunset; the sky had a "red-snapper" look, with the color so intense it took your breath away. It's days like this that you have to squirrel away, taking them out like nuts in the winter to enjoy all over again.
