The sailing summer has just begun and the wind was up this past Saturday for a combined full distance race and Commodores welcome with a full moon sail in the evening. The Flying Scots came out in full force for the 1 p.m start. Challenging the high winds[15 to 20mph] where usually only the cabin boats dare to tread. As a result Ben and Deb Williams as well as Commodore Don Johnson [with Karen Hewitt aboard handling the jibsheets] shattered Rick Wojnars previous all time distance record of one hour and forty minutes[he was sailing a 16 ft. Prindle catamaran at the time three years ago] by finishing in a blistering one hour and thirty two minutes[Ben and Deb on "Suzie Q"] and one hour thirty eight minutes for Don and Karen on "Sunset". In doing so they left the fleet far behind..their secret was constant "planing" all afternoon on close and broad reaches. Other mention goes to Bill Vokac who sailed with his big 150 percent genoa up all day[with four crewman to handle it] on "Rumpole" his macgregor 25...they where very fast .Also after sailing over two hours in the heavy conditions the little wooden Thistle skippered by Craig Rost and crewed by Alex just nipped the vaunted "Synergy" of Gerry Christman and Sons fame at the finish. Gerry also served as race committee by giving all participants a phrf handicap starting time and starting the slowest boat first.Craig was last to start and spent the rest of the day overtaking boats while keeping his tippy Thistle insides dry.A truly amazing feat!
